Downton Abbey Mystery KAL- Clue #3

Hi everyone! Welcome to week three! I am going to keep this week's post pretty brief because this week's clue has a less knitting than the prior weeks. I'm sure this will work out perfectly giving you plenty of time to brew some tea and enjoy the rest of your day. I hope you are all enjoying the holiday weekend. Wait, what IS a weekend? Right? :)

Jumping right in, here are links to the first two clues if you are just joining our KAL:

Clue #1

Clue #2

We've just finished the thumb gusset and put those stitches on a holder. You also joined the hand and worked rows 5-8 of the Rosebud Lace pattern one last time.

Finishing the Hand:

-K 5 more rounds
-Try on your gauntlet and measure how close you are to your ideal hand length. This part is customizable. If you only need 3/4" or less to be at your ideal length, move on to the garter stitch portion. If you need more than 3/4", knit a few more rows first.
-Work in Garter Stitch (knit a round, purl a round) for 10 more rounds or approximately 3/4".
-Bind-off and weave in ends.

Finishing the Thumb:

-Using your DPNs and beginning with the right side (lace side) of the gauntlet facing you, place your thumb stitches back on the needles in the following order: 5 on the first needle (needle 1), 6 on the second needle (needle 2), 5 on the third needle (needle3).
-Re-join your yarn at the last stitch on needle 3 and knit 1 round, picking up 2 sts along the opening between the thumb (on needles 1 and 3) and the rest of the hand to close up the gap.

*Note* If your thumb seems significantly smaller than the thumb opening after picking up these stitches, decrease the number of stitches on the thumb when you knit the next round by knitting these two picked up stitches together with the stitches on the right or left of them. (K2tog the first two sts of Needle 1 and K2tog the last two sts of needle 2.) Or, if you think you need more then that, decrease by however many stitches you think you need evenly throughout the row. I will leave this up to knitter's choice. However, you must pick these stitches up in order to seamlessly close up the thumb gap, but once you've done that, it's very easy to decrease back down to a size that works for you.

-Knit 4 rounds.
-Knit 6 rounds in garter stitch (knit one round, purl one round)
-Bind off and weave in your ends.

Thus endeth Clue #3!

Next week we get to find out what that provisional cast on was all about! :)

Happy knitting!
Kristen

PS. If you are interested in knitting this same Rosebud Lace pattern but as a pair of socks, fellow Ravelrer patchworkgandalf has written up a simple sock pattern incorporating the lace pattern and wanted to offer it to you all for free. You can find it as a Ravelry Download here. She hasn't yet fully tested the pattern but is working on it! :)

  1. Since I am relatively new to knitting, what is the best way to add the two stitches for the thumb? Should I just knit front and back or is there a better method?

  3. Um, what is the "right side" when you're knitting in the round? I'm also relatively new at this, but having lots of fun! (Although the thumb has also confused me a little and I'm looking forward to the answer to the previous post.)

  5. Anonymous (in regards to the thumb)- when you put those stitches back on the holder, you'll see where the thumb gap will be. It's the space between the hand and the thumb, and if you do not pick up two stitches there, you'll have a hole. You pick up the stitches while you work your way around, in the closed stitches below as if you were picking up stitches along the edge of a knitted piece. If you do a google search for "picking up stitches in knitting" you should find some examples.

Anonymous (in regards to right side vs wrong side) in this case it is the lace side of the gauntlet.

  7. Thanks so much for such a fun pattern, it sure is brave to help so many people learn new techniques. It is funny that one of the fibers in sportmate is outlast, it has outlasted a few of my hiccups. The pattern Is well written it is just that I am doing 2 at a time magic loop and me not paying attention.. I thought it would be worth mentioning to beginner knitters or those new to lace to not get discouraged looking at their lace. I remember my first lace projects looked like an amateur and then after blocking I had to give myself a pat on the back. What would you recommend for bind off ? Just keep knitted bind off loose, or maybe purl 2 together put stitch back on left needle etc? Kristen I can't thank you enough for the enjoyment of this project and learning about Downton Abbey. Carly and I have enjoyed watching this series and are addicted , see you at work, Marilyn (from JBW)!

  8. Why can't I print the clues from this blog? I know there should be two pages but the 1st page is blank and the 2nd page doesn't have the complete patten. I have this problem with every clue until I get on the Ravelry forum. Help!

  9. This is a youtube clip on how to knit and pick up stitches on a gusset ( http://youtu.be/p9ghFRvbOIw) I hope this helps.

  11. Marilyn- Awesome! Can't wait to see them! Bind off is Knitter's Choice so just do your favorite. :)

DancingLeaf06- I've been recommending that people copy and paste the text from the blog into a word doc and then print the word doc. It's much easier and uses less paper. The blog is unfortunately not a very printer- friendly format.

    Happy knitting!

  12. the first part says to knit 5 more rounds.....is that knit all needles or do we still follow the rosebud lace on needle 2?

  14. so sad...was making great progress, almost at the thumb gusset, then discovered I had 28 stitches on the back needle. started to frog, then noticed that I had got off pattern somehow way back so had to undo all the way back to row 16. :-( I may have to send this to someone to get me back up to speed. I am just so disheartened, so am going to watch episode 3 and just try to forget about my knitting for a while. and, the Ravelry site appears to be down as well...sigh.

    1. Don't be discouraged. Had my project done through Clue #2 and decided it was just too large for me. Ripped it out and started over. This is the second time I have started over. I'm notorious for tearing projects out and starting over. I had even done a swatch. Changed to a size 2 needle, reduced the overall stitches by three and now it fits like I want it to. I like my fingerless mittens a bit on the snug side. Almost finished with Clue #2. I'll have Clue # 3 done by tomorrow evening. Just keep on going.

  15. This is my first KAL and I'm really enjoying it. I bought a different colorway (Spats) because the Christmas at Downton colorway was sold out (I've since rectified that problem!) ... not sure I love my current colorway but I love the KAL! Thanks, JBW!
