Downton Abbey Mystery KAL Week #4 - Episode Guide

Hi everyone!

Here is the key for episode 4 of Downton Abbey. This is the order the knitting should have been done in. Stitch counts for each section are also noted here. Keep in mind that your stitch counts might be an odd # if you have done the beginner lace in either of the past two weeks, even if you have done some of the intermediate clues. You should still be able to knit these clues, but don't be alarmed if your stitch count does not match what this says. These stitch counts are only valid if you have stuck with the beginner or the intermediate throughout your entire piece so far. If you've been mixing and matching you will most likely also have an odd # of sts at this point.

Also, please note that in the beginner section of Prompt #3, there is an extra increase for those who are working with an odd # of stitches. If you have an odd #, you need to do the beginner prompt here no matter what. Everyone should end Week 4 with the same # of stitches.

So here is the key for this week's clues:


 Prompt #1: When Daisy helps Alfred learn some important kitchen skills, knit the following:

 *Daisy reluctantly helps teach Alfred some key cooking skills to prepare for his exam.


 Beginner Section 1: Stockinette (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
                                                                                                
Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4

*69 sts between markers.


 Intermediate Section 2: Mock Rib (2 Rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (p1, k1) repeat to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*70 sts between markers.

Prompt #2:  When Mrs. Hughes spills the beans on Anna's secret, knit the following:

 *Mr. Bates threatens to leave Downton, so Mrs. Hughes tells him what happened to Anna.


 Beginner Section 2: Stockinette (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
                                                                                                
Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4

*71 sts between markers.


 Intermediate Section 1: Mock Rib (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (k1, p1) repeat to last st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*72 sts between markers.



 Prompt #3: When Mr. Carson utters the words that were the namesake of the Lorna's Laces Limited Edition color for this month while talking to Mr. Molsley, knit the following:

*Mr. Carson tells Molsley that he will wait for his answer "with baited breath." See what we did there with the word play? Tee hee. We thought it was pretty funny. ;)

Beginner Section 3: Garter Stitch (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k 35, k1f&b, k to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): knit

*74 sts between markers (from the extra increase.)


Intermediate Section 3: Garter Stitch (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): knit

*74 sts between markers

Downton Abbey Mystery KAL Week #4

Hi everyone! 

Welcome to week #4 of the Downton Abbey Mystery KAL! You will notice that this week is a much lighter knitting week than the last couple of weeks. This is primarily because we do have a large number of stitches on the needles at this point and I want to make sure you have plenty of time to do the knitting between weeks. 

Also, you'll notice I've left the stitch counts off of this week's clue. I had a few folks suggest that I only provide them on the Monday post in order to keep the air of mystery. Last week, it was way too easy to tell which order the clues go in, which doesn't really give anyone any reason to follow the show. I was just so worried after week two that I think I over-compensated a bit to make week 3 extra clear and in the process, made it too clear. I think I've found the balance this week. If you are heavily relying on the stitch counts, I do recommend you wait until tomorrow to start knitting this week's clue and just enjoy watching the show and taking notes on the prompts this evening, perhaps with a bit of wine in hand? :)

A few people were very concerned last week about running out of yarn. You should have started your new ball of yarn in Week 3. If you started it earlier then that, be sure to check your row gauge to make sure you are on target. Otherwise, if you started in week 3, you should be fine.

Last update, those knitting week 2, a lovely gal on Ravelry, Jackie Jones, has created charts for the patterns in week #2 and shared them with the group. If you would prefer to knit from a chart, please be sure to check those out here. 

Ok, on to the week #4 clues! Keep in mind that these are not in order so be sure to watch the show before you begin knitting (or at least wait to start until you are watching) to make sure you are knitting these in the correct order! Remember, I will post the key to these clues tomorrow morning, along with the stitch counts.

Downton Abbey Mystery KAL Clue #4

Hi everyone!

Hope your week has gone well. Things have been crazy in JBW-land as we gear up for a fun and exciting couple of months. My apologies for not popping into the Ravelry group as much this past week. Hopefully all questions were answered, and of course, feel free to message me directly anytime if you have an urgent question. I am always happy to help! :)

So hopefully by now you've all finished the hand on your right gauntlet and are ready to take out your provisional cast on and find out what fun is in store. Here we go!

-Remove provisional cast on and place stitches back on your needles dividing the stitches evenly among the needles and rejoin yarn to resume working in the round. (This is a good opportunity to knit those 4 rounds IF you missed them at the beginning.)
-Increase to 52 sts if you do not  already have that number on the needles by knitting a round and spacing your increases evenly throughout the row. Use your preferred method of increasing.
-Purl one round
-*k1, k1f&b; repeat from * to end of round. (78 sts now on the needles)
-Rearrange sts on the needles so that you have 26 sts on each needle.

Work Shell Lace Edging pattern as follows:

Shell Lace Edging Pattern

Rnd 1: *k2tog, k9, ssk; repeat from * to end of rnd. (66 sts)
Rnd 2: Knit
Rnd 3: *k2tog, k7, ssk; repeat from * to end of rnd. (54 sts)
Rnd 4: Knit
Rnd 5: *k2tog, yo, (k1, yo) 5 times, ssk; repeat from * to end of round (78 sts)
Rnd 6: Purl

*Repeat rows 1-6 two more times. (A total of 3 repeats)

Bind off and weave in ends. Feel free to block your gauntlet if you'd like. If you do, be sure to pin out the points on your lace edging. Otherwise, you can also wait to block both gauntlets together at the end. I'm the impatient sort when it comes to things like this, so I definitely blocked my first glove before the second. But that's just me. It's entirely knitter's choice. :)


Also, the photos show my right gauntlet when it was blocking since I can now show you what it looks like. Hopefully you all have some similar results. :)
