Downton Abbey Mystery KAL Week #4 - Episode Guide

Hi everyone!

Here is the key for episode 4 of Downton Abbey. This is the order the knitting should have been done in. Stitch counts for each section are also noted here. Keep in mind that your stitch counts might be an odd # if you have done the beginner lace in either of the past two weeks, even if you have done some of the intermediate clues. You should still be able to knit these clues, but don't be alarmed if your stitch count does not match what this says. These stitch counts are only valid if you have stuck with the beginner or the intermediate throughout your entire piece so far. If you've been mixing and matching you will most likely also have an odd # of sts at this point.

Also, please note that in the beginner section of Prompt #3, there is an extra increase for those who are working with an odd # of stitches. If you have an odd #, you need to do the beginner prompt here no matter what. Everyone should end Week 4 with the same # of stitches.

So here is the key for this week's clues:

Prompt #1: When Daisy helps Alfred learn some important kitchen skills, knit the following:

*Daisy reluctantly helps teach Alfred some key cooking skills to prepare for his exam.

Beginner Section 1: Stockinette (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4

*69 sts between markers.

Intermediate Section 2: Mock Rib (2 Rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (p1, k1) repeat to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*70 sts between markers.

Prompt #2:  When Mrs. Hughes spills the beans on Anna's secret, knit the following:

*Mr. Bates threatens to leave Downton, so Mrs. Hughes tells him what happened to Anna.

Beginner Section 2: Stockinette (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4

*71 sts between markers.

Intermediate Section 1: Mock Rib (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (k1, p1) repeat to last st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*72 sts between markers.

Prompt #3: When Mr. Carson utters the words that were the namesake of the Lorna's Laces Limited Edition color for this month while talking to Mr. Molsley, knit the following:

*Mr. Carson tells Molsley that he will wait for his answer "with baited breath." See what we did there with the word play? Tee hee. We thought it was pretty funny. ;)

Beginner Section 3: Garter Stitch (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k 35, k1f&b, k to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): knit

*74 sts between markers (from the extra increase.)

Intermediate Section 3: Garter Stitch (2 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): knit

*74 sts between markers

Ok, this is where we stop this week. Be sure to check in over on the Ravelry thread if you have questions!

Happy knitting!

  1. Quick question: on yesterday's post, the repeat for the Daisy/Alfred prompt is (p1, k1), but on today's post that same repeat is (k1, p1). Am I missing something?

  2. I don't guess it really matters, as long as you keep it a consistent rib, but just noticed it and thought I'd point it out...

  3. I learned yesterday that the correct spelling is bated breath. It comes from shakespeare , merchant of venice, and means abated breath, or breath that is held. The baited breath is a mis-spelling and mis-understanding of the original phrase. Cool eh? I love language and looking up the origin of phrases and words.

  4. Breathing life- that is really interesting! I had no idea! I've only ever seen it as "baited" but when we changed it for the yarn who knew we were actually correcting it. So neat!

Also, thanks everyone for noticing the stitches. You are right, it doesn't really matter which order it's done in as long as it's switched up for Row 2. I'll swap it to match the first post for consistency's sake. Thanks!

  5. I have finished this week and only have about 50 yards of yarn left. There are still 4 weeks left on this season of Downton Abbey. Was this test knitted? I visited the Ravelry group and it seems others are also running out of yarn. I don't want to invest another $25 in this project and don't want to add another yarn color because I don't absolutely love it. I guess I will just frog. What a waste of my time. Very disappointed in the way this KAL was run. I also looked on the project pages on Ravelry and many have frogged and been unhappy with this KAL. This should not have happened when I bought the yarn called for in the pattern by JBW. My gauge and stitch count is right so it's not me. Just wanted JBW to know they have another dissatisfied customer.

  6. I am really disappointed this week - 2/2. I'm leaving for an 8-day cruise with 2 of DA KAL people and we were hoping to get week 5 clues before we leave, but it's not looking likely. The timing on these clues has been a little sporadic.

  7. Hi Jan. I am wondering if there is some issue with your browser on your computer because every single clue was posted at 7am PST on Sunday morning throughout the KAL. Perhaps your browser isn't refreshing the page each time you visit the site?
