Downton Abbey Mystery KAL Week #3

Hello everyone! I hope you all are well! I know last week was frustrating for a lot of people and I have gone to great lengths to ensure that this week is better. A few things to note about this week's clues:

1) I've added stitch counts to the end of each section so that you can keep track of where you are at. The main reason I did not last week is because it would have given away the order in which you were to knit the clues. I've taken a bit of the guesswork out of where these clues happen in order to give you more direction. I hope this helps!

2) I've written everything line by line (except in instances where you are repeating the same two rows over and over.) This should help avoid any confusion about the increases and how to incorporate them into the stitch patterns.

3) Because each row is getting longer, you notice that I begin to break up the knitting a little more so you'll have fewer rows to knit each week, but there are more stitches to knit so it should even out a bit.

4) This week it is still recommended that you not start knitting until you watch DA or AFTER it airs. This is because the clues are specifically designed to coordinate with events in the show. That said, if you are not watching the show, it is advisable that you wait until the episode guide tomorrow morning.

Ok, here we go with Week #3!

Clue #1: When Rose is rescued from an embarrassing situation, do the following:

Beginner: Stockinette (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4

*repeat rows 1 & 2 once more. If you finished the week 2 clue with 57 sts instead of 55 sts, do not do the increases on the second repeat of Row 1 of the pattern. (59 sts between markers)

Intermediate: Mock Rib (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (k1, p1) repeat to last st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 3 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (p1, k1) repeat to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 4 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*You should now have 60 sts in between markers.

Clue #2: When Mary receives a surprising request, from a certain gentleman, knit the following:

Beginner: Reverse Angle Mesh Lace (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (yo, ssk) repeat to last stitch before marker, yo, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*Repeat Rows 1 & 2 one more time. (63 sts between markers)  **Stitch counts updated on 1/20**

Note: Like last week, after the first row, you may find that when you get to the last 2 sts before the marker, your only option is to ssk, but then you don't have a last stitch to increase into. On those rows, when you get to the last 2 sts, yo, ssk but don't drop off the sts, then knit into the front of the stitches (since you’ve already knit into the back). This doesn't increase, but it negates the decrease and maintains the pattern, similarly to last week’s mesh lace.

Intermediate: Loop Stitch (4 Rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to last st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, *(k1, sl 1 wyib) repeat to last 2 sts before next marker, k2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

*Repeat Rows 1 & 2 once more. (64 sts between markers)

Clue #3: When Edith makes a risky decision, knit the following:

Beginner: Reverse Angle Mesh Lace (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (yo, ssk) repeat to last stitch before marker, yo, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*Repeat Rows 1 & 2 one more time. (67 sts between markers) **Stitch counts updated on 1/20**

Note: Some rows you may find that when you get to the last 2 sts before the marker, your only option is to ssk, but then you don't have a last stitch to increase into.

(68 sts between markers)

Alright folks, this is then end of week 3. Although I am traveling again for work this weekend, (VK Live this time, yes, I wear a lot of hats at Jimmy Beans) I will most definitely be online tonight and tomorrow morning (Monday) for answering questions. Also, I've started a Clue #3 Thread in the Ravelry group for you all, so let the chatting begin!

Happy knitting everyone!
Best,
Kristen

  2. Thanks so much for working so hard on this, Kristen!

I agree with you that providing the stitch counts takes a bit of the fun of the mystery out of the equation. That said, having read the ravelry thread, I understand why you felt the need to include them this week.

Maybe a good compromise would be to not include stitch counts with the clues that are issued prior to the episode (so the section/clue order is not revealed too early), but do include them in the pattern key issued the following Monday (so that folks can check their work, or wait to begin then if they so desire)?

Looking forward to some knitting and the episode tonight!

  3. I was unable to print page 2 of the instructions. It shows a blank page in the preview. I like the stitch count. It helps me. I also like the visuals. It lets me know whether I am doing things correctly. I am more interested in knitting things correctly than solving a mystery, but I am not an advanced knitter.

  4. I think Then I made a boo-boo when you state "On the rows when you get to 2 last stitches...yo ssk BUT DON'T DROP OFF THE STS, then knit into the front of the stitches...
Is there a video on Youtube I can refer too in order to achieve this? My brain is not able to visualize this move. Thank you

  5. In the Rib Lace section update from 1/15 and repeated in your post for today, Row 8 is printed out as "Row 6". The directions state "k4, *p5" etc. It should be listed as "Row 8" and it should read "k4, *p6".......shouldn't it? For an enthusiastic intermediate level knitter, I am working way too hard to get my knitting to come out right. I'm not giving up yet, but I am losing my enthusiasm and my confidence. I hope week 3 and the rest of the knit along won't require so much editing. This should be a lot more fun than it has been so far. Thanks for your efforts, but I am disappointed.

  6. I am very glad you are including the stitch ct. On the Sunday clues. Can this thing get any longer? It took me 3 hours just to complete the first clue last night. I too am kinda disappointed here.

  7. Kristen - I'm waiting for my yarn and eager to start. (Should arrive tomorrow.) This is my first KAL, so I'm a bit anxious about being behind. Any tips to help me catch up?? How important is the timing of the clues/prompts. Do I need to re-watch the episodes?? Or can I just knit.

  8. Hi everyone, sorry for the delayed reply. Blogger hasn't been letting me post comments for some reason. Trying to give this another go:

Ashleigh- yes, I think you are right, that is a great compromise for the upcoming week. Several others have suggested it too.

Cherie43- Thanks for the comment, the knitting is meant to take a bit longer than it would to watch the show. The idea is that you begin the knitting while watching, but then you have a little to work on during the week too. I hope this makes sense.

DulcieAnne- You should be able to just start knitting at this point, the pattern is all ready to go.

emjayaitch- sorry for that copy and paste error. I fixed it a few days ago. Hopefully you've seen the last edits by now. Week 3 was all set though with no errors. That should be the case for the rest of the clues as well. Thanks for sticking with it!

jimmersgal- there is not a video to my knowledge. This is more of a reverse of the k1f&b. Instead you knit into the back first, then bring the needle to the front and knit into it from there. Does this help?

Evening Star Quilters- did you end up getting it to print? What I do when it doesn't print correctly is I copy the entire text and paste it into a word doc and print it from there. That way you don't get any of the junk in the sidebar either. Does this help?

    Best,
    Kristen
