Hi everyone!
Hi everyone!
It's time for week 2! I hope you all are mostly caught up and ready! If not, that is totally ok. When you are ready you can either watch the episode again or just take notes tonight and knit this when you are ready. Actually, that is something you may want to do anyway with these clues. Chances are that this it more knitting than you can get done between each clue so you may want to watch for the events in the episode or make note of it so that you can go back and knit it later.
I'll also be posting a key tomorrow morning, with these instructions again in case you missed anything.
So, here we go with week 2!
Week 2 Instructions:
Prompt #1:
When Branson suffers a social faux pas, knit one of the two options below:
Simple Option: Moss
Stitch (also known as Seed Stitch by us Americans)
Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (k1, p1) repeat from to 1 st
before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 2 (WS): k4, (k1, p1) repeat to last 4 sts (lining up
your sts so that you knit the purls and purl the knits from the previous row),
k4
*repeat rows 1 & 2 until you have 34 sts between the
markers. You may find that the increases are a bit tricky in this pattern. You
may have a row or two where you have to do two knits in a row in order to be
able to do the increases. This is fine as it will work out evenly in the next
row.
Intermediate Option: Moss
Slip Stitch
Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (sl 1 purlwise, k1) repeat to
last stitch before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 2 (WS): k4, *(yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k1) repeat to
marker, sl m; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 3 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (sl 1 purlwise, k1) repeat
to last stitch before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 4 (WS): k4, *k2, (yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k1) repeat to
marker, sl m; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
*Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until you have 34 sts between markers.
EDITED 1/14 for clarity.
Prompt #2:
When Lady Mary gets back on the horse both physically and possibly metaphorically, knit one of the two options below:
Simple Option: Easy
Mesh Lace (Multiples of 2)
Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (yo, k2tog) repeat to last
stitch before marker, yo, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
*Note: Some rows you may find that when you get to the last 2 sts before the marker, your only option is to k2tog, but then you don't have a last stitch to increase into. On those rows, when you get to the last 2 sts, yo, k2tog but don't drop off the sts, then knit into the back. This doesn't increase, but it negates the decrease and maintains the pattern.
Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.
*Repeat rows 1 & 2 three times more.
Intermediate Option: Rib Lace (Edited 1/15)
Row 1: k4, *k1f&b, k2, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 3 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 2: k4, *p3, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last st before marker, p1; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 3: k4, *k1f&b, k3, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 4 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 4: k4, *p4, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last 2 sts before marker, p2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 5: k4, *k1f&b, k4, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 5 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 6: k4, *p5, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last 3 sts before marker, p3; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 7: k4, *k1f&b, k5, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 6 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k3, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 8: k4, *p6, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last 4 sts before marker, p4; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
*42 sts between markers
Added 1/15: Some folks said a visual of this lace rib pattern would be helpful. Here you go!
EDITED 1/14 for clarity.
Prompt #3:
When Mrs. Patmore has an "episode", repeat the instructions from Prompt #1 for the same number of rows.
Finishing Week 2: Everyone does the following
K 6 rows in garter stitch (knit every row) with increases on the RS rows.
*Beginners will end with 55 sts between markers and Intermediates will have 56.
Also, I will be at TNNA (a yearly knitting trade show) in San Diego for work all weekend and through Monday. I will try to get online and answer as many questions as possible in that time, but I may not get to everyone until I return to the office on Tuesday. Asking questions in the Ravelry group may turn up the answers you need from other participants to please try there first if your question is urgent. Thanks for understanding.
Happy knitting everyone!
Kristen
Reading through Moss Slip Stitch, Row 3 - pattern starts as usual with K1 front and back, but at the end of the pattern sequence before the stitch marker, only a K1? Not the K1f&b? Doesn't that throw off the pattern increase?
ReplyDeleteFor the last instruction to knit every row with increases on RS, is that before and after the markers as done previously?
ReplyDeleteHow many repeats do you do of Mrs pattimore's section? What should the stitch count be at the end of that section?
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun knit!
PBS ran the first 2 episodes of the 4th season last week (at least the local PBS did), so do these instructions correspond the 2nd or 3rd episode the 4th season?
ReplyDeleteThe program is not airing on our stations, so I'm hoping you'll post the number of repeats for each pattern once the episode has aired.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Intermediate moss instructions do not come out to a K1before each marker as u repeat? OR is the K1 only before tonal marker?
ReplyDeleteHas anyone started to knit the Intermediate Option: Moss Slip Stitch? On row 2
ReplyDelete"Row 2 (WS): k4, *k1, (yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k1) repeat to marker, sl m; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4"
There is an extra stitch that before the marker that I'm thinking should be k1 like at the start of the increase section but it's not stated.
Also would make sense then on Row 4 to k2 at the beginning and end of each section.
And I agree that Row 3 should also have the k1f&b before the marker not k1.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated...I'm ready to knit!
I couldn't get the intermediate stitches to look right. Is there a mistake in the directions?
ReplyDeleteHow do you get the multiple of 2+1 for the moss stitches do we just make 1?
ReplyDeleteI will wait until morning. Hopefully instructions posted then will be clearer and all will be answered. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you to those who started knitting day 2right away. Hopefully the instructions will become clearer!
ReplyDeleteAre we only knitting three sections? Because Branson made more than one social faux pas, Mary "got back on the horse" more than once and Mrs. Pattmore had more than one episode!! So it looks like we could really do at least two repeats of each section??
ReplyDeleteGRRRR!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen this was originally posted (I can see now it was edited this morning at 7 am), row 3 for the intermediate option (moss slip stitch) ended on k1. I printed it when it was first posted, and knitted off that page last night. Now it ends on k1f&b.
Can I please get confirmation on this?
Tried several options for interpreting intermediate moss stitch section. None come out correctly as written. I am an experienced knitter and don't want to do plain moss stitch. Also, started Clue 2 with 34 stitches between markers so why would directions say there are 34 stitches between markers at end of moss section?
ReplyDeleteOn the "easy mesh lace" (instruction #2) The asterisk is before K1 f&b. This would lead one to believe that I should k1 f@b along with yo, K 2 tog across the row. This would increase the number of stitches unreasonably so I completed the section with a k1 f&b just before and just after the markers and knitted the yo, k2 tog across the rest of the row. Is that what was intended….?
ReplyDeleteIntermediate slip stitch issue: If I follow exactly, then I end up slipping the same stitch each row, which has led to carrying the same stitches up over 4 rows so far, and doesn't seem right. Everything is bunching up as a result. What am I missing?
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem as Meg. I carried it up the four rows and the back side has two prominent ridges going across the entire shawl. And the K2 after each marker is not making sense in row 4. What gives? Did no one test knit this shawl? Very disheartened.
ReplyDeleteLove the way the easy option is turning out. However, when prompt 3 says to repeat prompt 1 -- it does not say how many rows to complete as there are more than 34 stitches between the markers now?!? Do we do row 1 and 2 four times like the lace prompt? Thanks for doing this -- I am really enjoying the process -- my first KAL.
ReplyDeleteI am having a problem with the increases also. I decided to just knit and do the increases and then do the patterns. So, then I see increases at the edges of the shawl. Do we continue to do the increases? How many stitches should we have?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much
I agree with one of the above anonymous posters in that I observed two "faux pas" in succession, only caught one "horse" though, and noticed three "episodes" with Mrs. Patmore. Are each of these prompts only knit once, or is the way we interpret it a way to increase the size?
ReplyDeleteThese comments restored my sanity! I was beginning to think my pattern reading skills had completely evaporated. After tinking 4 long rows of very nice yarn, I will try once again to create something resembling an actual pattern, using the edited version furnished today. Onward!
ReplyDeleteKristen, Do you have a stitch count for the end of Prompt#3? or the end of the 6 row garter. Would be helpful to solve the extra YO on Row 1 of Prompt #2.. Thanks for all the help!
ReplyDeleteSusan
Hi everyone! Thanks for your patience and my sincerest apologies for not getting here sooner. I spent most of yesterday attempting to put out fires on Ravelry. I think I've got the pattern completely corrected now so most of you should be able to move past the first and second sections. I hope most of you have been over on Ravelry and have gotten the latest updates on there as well. To answer the question of stitch counts, those who did the beginner lace will have 55 sts at the end of the entire section and those who did the intermediate lace will have 56 sts. I hope this helps! -Kristen
ReplyDeleteJust to be sure: in Row 4 of the intermediate option of the moss slip stitch: How often is the K2 (at the beginning of the row) repeated? Just AFTER each marker until the end?
ReplyDeleteI am experienced knitter and my ribbed lace does no look like the picture! Not going back.
ReplyDeleteI'm so disappointed with this pattern. I'm an experienced knitter and this is a nightmare. Poor instructions take the fun out of a MKAL. You can do better, Jimmy Beans Wool.
ReplyDeleteI did not have to repeat rows 1&2 of the moss stitch to have 34 stitches between markers. Did I do something wrong.
ReplyDeleteAre we supposed to knit one set of increase rows between each pattern?
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, unfortunately Blogger has decided not to post my last response to these questions from 5 days ago, so my apologies for this delay. I hope most of you have found the answers you need on Ravelry.
ReplyDeleteKayGeeBee- the K2 is only repeated just after the marker. The repeat section between markers is in the parenthesis and then the full repeat between markers is from the start of the *. I hope this makes sense.
MikaPinka- No, you just must have knit some extra rows to begin with and that is fine. As long as you start section 2 with 34 sts, you are fine.
Carol R- no, the increase rows are integrated into the patterns so there is no need to do extra.
hope this helps everyone!
Kristen
Hi Kristen, for the finishing rows for week #2 it says to K6 rows in garter stitch with increases on RS rows. I get the k6 garter stitch but I'm not sure why it says "with increases on RS rows". I'm sure this has been addressed but I haven't been able to find it.
ReplyDeleteJust trying to catch up since I didn't get my yarn until the second week.
Thanks in advance! Mary
