Hi everyone! As promised, here is the key to the episode, clarifying the clues that are used in this section of the KAL. The directions for the knitting have not changed, but I have included them again here for your reference. Also, I realize I didn't include the Abbreviation Key in the initial post, so here it is now.
Hi everyone! As promised, here is the key to the episode, clarifying the clues that are used in this section of the KAL. The directions for the knitting have not changed, but I have included them again here for your reference. Also, I realize I didn't include the Abbreviation Key in the initial post, so here it is now.
Abbreviations:
k- knit
p- purl
co- cast on
pm- place
marker
sl m- slip
marker
k1f&b-
knit into the front and then the back of the same stitch. This creates 2
stitches where there was only 1 stitch before. (An increase.)
St(s)-
stitch(es)
yo- yarn
over
k2tog- knit
next 2 sts together
sl 1- slip 1
stitch (without knitting it)
yf- yarn
forward, bring the yarn forward to the front of your work
yb- yarn
back, move yarn to back of work
psso- pass
the slipped stitch over
p2tog- purl
next 2 sts together
Prompt #1:
"When Branson suffers a social faux pas, knit one of the two options below:"
Explanation: In the sitting room before the dinner party, Branson calls the Duchess "Your Grace" instead of just Duchess. Lady Violet corrects him and let's him know the proper title. This visibly makes Branson feel more out of place and uncomfortable.
Simple Option: Moss Stitch (also known as Seed Stitch in American terms)
Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (k1, p1) repeat from to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 2 (WS): k4, (k1, p1) repeat to last 4 sts (lining up your sts so that you knit the purls and purl the knits from the previous row), k4
*repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times or until you have 34 sts between the markers. You may find that the increases are a bit tricky in this pattern. You may have a row or two where you have to do two knits in a row in order to be able to do the increases. This is fine as it will work out evenly in the next row.
Intermediate Option: Moss Slip Stitch
Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (sl 1 purlwise, k1) repeat to last stitch before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 2 (WS): k4, * (yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k1) repeat to marker, sl m; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
Row 3 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (sl 1 purlwise, k1) repeat to last stitch before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 4 (WS): k4, *k2, (yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k1) repeat to marker, sl m; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4
*Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until you have 34 sts between markers.

Prompt #2:
"When Lady Mary gets back on the horse both physically and possibly metaphorically, knit one of the two options below:"
Explaination: Lady Mary agrees to go on a horseback ride with Lord Gillingham, a childhood acquaintance in what might possibly be her first ride since Matthew's death. There also seems to be a glimmer of a connection between them. Could it be the start of something more?
Simple Option: Easy Mesh Lace
Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (yo, k2tog) repeat to last stitch before marker, yo, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
*Note: Some rows you may find that when you get to the last 2 sts before the marker, your only option is to k2tog, but then you don't have a last stitch to increase into. On those rows, when you get to the last 2 sts, yo, k2tog but don't drop off the sts, then knit into the back. This doesn't increase, but it negates the decrease and maintains the pattern.
Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.
*Repeat rows 1 & 2 three times more. 41 sts between markers.
Intermediate Option: Rib Lace (Updated 1/15)
Row 1: k4, *k1f&b, k2, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 3 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 2: k4, *p3, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last st before marker, p1; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 3: k4, *k1f&b, k3, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 4 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k1, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 4: k4, *p4, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last 2 sts before marker, p2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 5: k4, *k1f&b, k4, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 5 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 6: k4, *p5, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last 3 sts before marker, p3; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 7: k4, *k1f&b, k5, (yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k2) to last 6 sts before marker, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, k3, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 8: k4, *p6, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last 4 sts before marker, p4; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
*42 sts between markers.
Added 1/15: Some folks, said a visual of this lace pattern would be helpful. Here you go!
EDITED 1/14 for clarity.
Prompt #3:
"When Mrs. Patmore has an "episode", repeat the instructions from Prompt #1 for the same number of rows."
Explaination: In the kitchen while cooking for the big dinner party, Mrs. Patmore appears overwhelmed and has what appears to be a panic attack while trying to manage all of the preparations. Daisy and Ivy joke that it might be a heart attack, but the doctor later confirms that it was just an anxiety attack. Poor Mrs. Patmore.
*repeat rows 1 & 2 three more times or until you have 49 sts between the markers.
*Repeat Rows 1 - 4 until you have 50 sts between markers.
Finishing Week 2: Everyone does this the following
K 6 rows in garter stitch (knit every row) with increases on the RS rows. Beginners will have 55 sts between markers and Intermediates will have 56 sts between markers.
Please let me know if you have any questions about these clues or the knitting. As I mentioned yesterday, I am currently out of town for work and will not be back into the office until Tuesday but I will try to get to every one of your questions then.
Happy knitting!
Kristen
For Prompt #3 we repeat the instructions for Prompt #1 - we do this until we have how many stitches between the markers? I would assume we are increasing by 10 since we went from 24 to 34 in Prompt #1 - is that correct?
ReplyDeleteSated first prompt with 34 stitches between markers so this just doesn't make sense
ReplyDeleteWhen will we get the "not knitting while watching the episode" pattern?
ReplyDeleteI don't have access to the episode (my dvr messed up!) but I want to keep up. Are the prompts in the correct order? I should just do prompt 1, then 2 then 3 and I'm ready for next week? Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteKirsten (from Ravelry BlossomWorks):
ReplyDeleteIt would be extremely useful if you can include the number of stitches there should be between markers (as suggested by Anonymous #1 above), for each Prompt/Option. You did this for Clue #2/Prompt 1, but not for any others. Knitters of all levels of expertise would welcome this little checkpoint, I am sure.
Please correct row 2 of the slip st moss section. There are 28 sts between markers, but the instructions are for an odd number of sts.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that was the biggest confusion-what to do with the extra stitch. This is a simple stitch pattern that is being made much more complicated because the pattern has errors. I have already seen the season. But I think I'll still wait until Wednesdays to knit to see where the kinks are and how they're addressed. I'm ising really nice upcycled cashmere and don't want to be ripping it back ;)
DeleteWhen you indicate in the pattern to repeat the two rows of stitches until you have 34 stitches between markers, does that number vary at all depending on if you did any practices rows of the increase rounds during week one instructions? The first week instructions indicated you could repeat a few more increases to get comfortable with the pattern, therefore effecting the number of stithes between markers before you start working on week two....... is there a set number of rows that should be completed for the instructions in week 2, prompt 1? I am wondering if having added an extra round of increase rows in week one is going to effect my patterning in this section.
ReplyDeletePlease clarify what you mean after prompt 1 (multiple of 2 + 1); prompt 2 (multiples of 2). Thanks.
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI am also having trouble with row 2 of the slip stitch moss pattern. I don't have the right number of stitches between markers to follow the directions for row 2 and have it come out right. And I can't continue on until I get an answer!
Slip stitch moss pattern: Are we slipping the same stitch on 3 successive rows? I don't get how that gets us anywhere at all.
ReplyDeleteHow many rows to do for prompt 3? 8 rows? Also, should yf actually be yo in row 1 of rib lace? Else, decreases far outnumber increases
ReplyDeleteThe moss slip stitch pattern is something of a dog's breakfast--the commenters that said that it is set for an odd number of stitches whereas we are supposed to have an even number on our needles, are absolutely right. Please, please give us the right instructions as we are stuck until we get them. I have ripped and reknit several times and I want to get on with it!
ReplyDeleteunless one of us figures it out, I don't think we are going to get an answer until after Tuesday when the lady gets back from her trip to S.D. I was just hoping maybe she would be able to communicate with us while out of town. Speaking for myself, I am not very patient when I am excited about a new knitting project!
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to rip back to where I stopped in week one and just add one stitch to each set of stitches between the markers. This will give me the odd number required to start the slip moss stitch.
ReplyDeleteAt some point will you just print this pattern. I am totally lost as to what to do now. There are so many opinions and problems. I long for a simple pattern and not this mystery thing.
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to a pattern on Ravelry that shows what the Rib Lace (intermediate option under Clue #2, prompt #2) will look like - for us visual folks out there:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/christmas-lace#
Think this is what we're supposed to be doing for the slipped moss stitch:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.craftcookie.com/knitting-stitches/knit-purl-stitches/113-eyelet-moss-stitch
The pattern has been updated. I just happened to re-read through the above directions and noticed the changes.
ReplyDeleteKristen - thank you for the corrections. None of us are perfect, whether it is in knitting or anything else, and I certainly do forgive you for making a mistake. But I really did expect a heartfelt apology for causing a lot of frustration and loss of knitting time. I still hope that this can be a fun project for all of us and we can proceed with confidence that you are doing your very best to provide accurate instructions for us.
ReplyDeleteFor finishing clue 2, knit 6 with increases on right side, do you mean k1f&b in 1st and last stitch between markers?
ReplyDeleteHow many stitches when project is done?
Never have done a KAL, and I think this is very neat project you have chosen for this knitting adventure. My wish is that some folks on Ravelry just relax until the pattern wording is sorted out, so that the knitting can be a pleasant experience. From now on I will just monitor this blog for any modifications to the pattern that might be needed.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - I sincerely apologize if you think I was being too critical. I hope you will feel free to read all the comments, I promise I will not do it again!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Thanks for your patience and my sincerest apologies for not getting here sooner. I spent most of yesterday attempting to put out fires on Ravelry. I think I've got the pattern completely corrected now so most of you should be able to move past the first and second sections. I hope most of you have been over on Ravelry and have gotten the latest updates on there as well.To answer the question of stitch counts, those who did the beginner lace will have 55 sts at the end of the entire section and those who did the intermediate lace will have 56 sts. I hope this helps! -Kristen
ReplyDeletens9patch- I truly am sorry for my Radio silence here yesterday. I spent all day over on Ravelry trying to sift through and find out exactly what people were struggling with I could fix the issue as quickly as possible. Because of that, I was working from 10am until about 10:30pm and I still didn't get a chance to post my apologies over on the blog. (There were over 1000 posts/comments for me to wade through on Ravelry). I hope you were able to get over to Ravelry to see that I did indeed apologize over there for everyone's frustration. It was never my intent to cause any issues or waste anyone's time. Unfortunately, I could not help the fact that I had to travel over the weekend for work, and be away from all of you during that time. My internet at the hotel was spotty at best and I tried several times to get online only to continually be kicked off. I honestly responded as quickly as I possibly could upon returning to work on Tuesday. I am going to do my best to make sure this doesn't happen next week, and in the meantime, I do appreciate your patience while I get caught up.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Kristen
i am still a little confused. is it possible to write out the 8 rows of the rib lace rather than repeat the two rows. i am not sure where to begin the pattern with the increases. thank you.
ReplyDeletec
Thanks Kristen, I do feel sorry for you that this happened as well as for the rest of us!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kristen. I too am sorry that you were so swamped when you returned.
ReplyDeleteThe only question I have is do we continue to increase between all of the markers or just on the ends. Also, how many stitches should we have between the markers when the increases are finished? Thanks so much!
The corrected pattern says 42 sts between markers for the intermediate option rib lace.. Comment above says 56 sts. Which is correct?
ReplyDeleteKristen... Perhaps I'm missing something here but I don't see how the clues relate to the knitting as one does not need to figure out a stitch guide from watching the show, also, how many stitches are on the shawl at the end of the project? Thanks, Caraleen
ReplyDeleteThis has been one of the most frustrating projects I have ever encountered. The directions have been inconsistent and the knitted product so far looks nothing like the picture that was posted. This experience has taken all the excitement and joy away. I have been knitting for over 50 years and I have completed some very intricate patterns. I will never again participate in a KAL from JBW. It is obvious that this was hastily prepared and ill-conceived. I am using expensive yarn and the hours I have devoted to this project could have been put to a far better purpose. I feel exploited for being a Downton fan.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is a lot of knitting for one clue/episode! I'm just finishing the first prompt. My moss stitch is not perfect, but oh we'll, not ripping it out!
ReplyDeleteIm also wondering about the number of stitches between markers when you have done the 6 rows of garter stich in the end. Its good to know if you done it right before you start with next weeks knitting.
ReplyDeleteIm not a very good knitter but i think this is really fun and the pattern seems easy and clear to me (im doing the easy version). Tanks for this lovely idea of a downton-KAL!
Susan - I totally agree with you and after much thought I have decided to quit this KAL. I agree with everything you said and am not going to continue with the frustration.
ReplyDeleteKristen - I am sorry to say but I think you have bit off way more than you can chew!
I have not been frustrated because I waited to begin for a few days. I love working with the yarn I chose. Kristen, don' t get frustrated with those who are complaining ....there are always people who give up at the first struggle and there are always those who are willing to solve the problem. Thank you for your time and talent. Psara
ReplyDeleteKristen has not answered questions on rave or and many of us are still waiting for prompt 1 to be corrected to match what she said in post 702. Her directions and what she says don't match. Prompt 2 continues to confuse me even with this picture. Without directions written to match what she says in a post does not help me knit this project. I spent $50 plus shipping for the yarn and feel that I completely wasted my money on a pattern that I cannot knit. This is probably what upsets me most is that I have very expensive yarn and a pattern that cannot be knit. Upset to the point of tears again.
ReplyDeleteI'm with psara. I've been able to go along with the pattern, and while my moss stitch might not be perfect, it will look fine. Of course my kotto s "it's not a mistake, it's a design element"
ReplyDeleteI think there is a problem still with the even number rows of the rib lace pattern. Instructions state "Row 2: k4, *p3, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4". This means every repeat has the p3 in it and stitches do not line up with row 1. Seems the first * needs to be AFTER the p3, and only done ONCE between each marker. Same with the p4 and p5 in rows 4, 6 and 8.
ReplyDeleteYou are only repeating the part in parens to the next marker, then repeating from * after each marker. You are correct that the first p3 is only done once between markers.
DeleteWhy oh why is the repeat asterisk not clarified? I too have always thought a repeat with an asterisk goes back to previous asterisk not to a parenthesis. This has caused numerous rip outs.
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess I'm not completely stupid either...but I won't give up. I also spent a lot for my yarn...I'm only on my second set of the Intermediate Option: Moss Slip Stitch pattern for Episode 2. with lots of frogging. I'll never be ready for Episode 3 at this rate and if I am, does this mean every pattern on this KAL is going to be so badly translated?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteHi there - I believe that there might still be a mistake (or typo) on Episode 2, prompt 2 (intermediate), row 8. It reads "k4, *p5..." and I believe it should be k4, *p6...?
ReplyDeleteHi folks,
ReplyDeleteBlogger seems to be only posting my comments intermittently and I see that some of my replies to your questions aren't showing up here. I hope all of you have been checking the Ravelry thread as most of these questions have been answered on there and the issues were corrected a while ago. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks!
Kristen
I am a little behind as I had to wait for the yarn to arrive. I am working on the 2nd episode, Prompt #2, Intermediate Option (Rib Lace) as follows: Row 2: k4, *p3, (yo, p2tog, p2) repeat to last st before marker, p1; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.
ReplyDeleteMy question is this: The 'yo' near the beginning comes right after p3 so do you want us to just leave the yarn in front and p2tog or do we leave the yarn in front and then wrap yarn again before p2tog?
Thank you!
I noticed someone mentioned that when there is an * to go back to we are not to actually go back to the * but to instructions within parentheses only. Could you clarify this please. I am wondering if maybe it would be better to wait until the entire pattern is revealed and all questions/concerns/errors have been clarified and/or corrected.
ReplyDeleteThis might sound dumb but are the prompts listed in the order we knit them? I joined late. I'm just starting week 2. I've seen the episodes but can't remember which came first.
ReplyDeleteLoveToKnit-
ReplyDeleteThe posts labeled "Episode Guide" are all in order so if you work from those you should be fine. Week 5 does not have an episode guide, so just work from the regular week 5 post. I hope this helps!
Kristen
This helps a lot -thanks. We are supposed to get more snow this weekend here in Michigan so I'm looking forward to a weekend full of knitting.
ReplyDeleteI just got going on this a couple days ago, I'm doing intermediate so I could learn a couple different stitches. I love the Rib Lace it is really pretty and fun to work up. So far so good. Thanks for the fun stitches.
