My Mountain Design Contest- Help Support Stitch Red with Your Vote!!!

The Sugar Bowl Hat
Some of you may have heard that I am one of 18 semi-finalists in Schachenmayr's My Mountain Hat Design Contest. My design, the Sugar Bowl Hat knit in Schachenmayr original's new Lova yarn, also doubles as a cowl for extra versatility in all of your activities. 

 I love items that have multiple uses, which was why I thought this design would be a great entry for the contest. I've already sent the sample (shown here in gray and teal on Amanda) to Schachenmayr since they are going to publish the design on their website, but I decided I needed one for myself too! Last night I cast on to make my own in a different color of Schachenmayr original Lova! It's already turning out really cute and I can't wait to wear it! 
Version #2 WIP

 Being a semi-finalist is honor enough, but if by some small chance I happened to be the finalist with the most votes, my hat pattern would be published as a paid download to support the charitable organization of my choice! For me, there is no question over which one to choose...

 The Stitch Red campaign in support of The Heart Truth would be my pick! so I am hoping all of you could help me out and go vote! I would love to have a pattern out there that is contributing to heart disease research and prevention for women. 
You can also wear it as a cowl!


For those of you who aren't familiar with Stitch Red, it's a campaign that JBW started almost 3 years ago to get the whole needle arts industry involved in spreading the word about heart disease and how it affect women. Knit Red and Sew Red are the two books we've created as our Stitch Red product along with tons of other industry vendors who have created Stitch Red products as well. Each has pledged 5% or more of the gross profits to go to The Heart Truth. On a side note we are excited to announce that Crochet Red will be released in February of 2014 and we are currently working on acquiring celebrity chefs to participate in Cook Red which will be out in 2015. 

 Heart disease is something that is personal to many of us. It runs in my family, and is something I know that I need to be aware of and watch out for in my own life. My father has had two heart surgeries and my family constantly lives with the reminder that every day with him is a gift. My grandfather (my father's father) died of a heart attack at a very young age, before I was born. It is my hope that my father is around to meet and enjoy his grandchildren, as his father never was.

 I really hope you'll take a moment to go and vote for my design! It would really mean a lot to me, and all of us here at Jimmy Beans Wool that have worked so hard on the Stitch Red Campaign over the years. We appreciate your help!

Sew Original Quilt & Creative Expo

We are going to the Sew Original Quilt & Creative Expo tomorrow!! We have been invited for a second year to this very, very fun event at the Grand Sierra Resort here in Reno and hope you will stop by our Stitch Red booth and say hi!!






We will have the Sew Red trunk show with us and some other fun Stitch Red goodies as well!! We will have the Piece of My Heart Pincushion kit, as well as some Knit Red books for those of you who knit as well as quilt!


The pieces from the book are worth the trip alone, but we will (Jeanne and Gus) will be there and can't wait to meet you all!!

Truckee Shawlette KAL and Red for Heart Health Month!

So are we ready?   Today is the day to start (or resume) knitting your Truckee Shawlette!!!  If you're not yet ready, no worries! I'm not quite ready to start today either!  I've gotten a little behind in my Downton MKAL knitting and haven't yet wound my yarn for my shawlette into balls.  That will be my homework for tonight!

In case you've missed the pertinent information, we will be starting this KAL today, February 1st and it will continue until March 8th, so you have plenty of time!  This a great project for working on when you need a break from your other projects because you can just cruise. If you aren't familiar with this pattern it is the Truckee Shawlette, our free pattern from December 2012 and it features Malabrigo Lace Superwash. We are the only ones selling this yarn and when it's gone we won't be getting more in the foreseeable future. We will operate this KAL in the same manner as the Downton Abbey MKAL, with all of the support and discussion in our Ravelry group.

It's not required to use the Malabrigo Lace Superwash, you may use any yarn you wish.  The shawlette can be knit as written with the lace held double for an approximate DK weight look. Alternatively, you can knit it as Rachel did and I plan to do; one strand of each color on smaller needles, US 4.  Do you like the look of the yarns held double but don't want to deal with two strands?  You can chose a DK weight yarn and knit with the US 7 needles instead.

You don't have to signup for this KAL either but it is nice to hear a chime in from those of you who are knitting along!  You can do so in the comments here or in the Ravelry Truckee Shawlette thread.

Do you know that today February 1st is National Wear Red Day to support women's heart disease awareness?  I thought that some of you may want to support the cause by knitting your Truckee Shawlette in red so I put together a few combinations of the Malabrigo Lace Superwash red family with some coordinating colors.

Decisions, decisions!!! Projects for the New Year!

Thank you to everyone who responded to my last blog questions! It seems that Knit/Crochet/other A-longs are a popular choice so we will begin planning more throughout the coming year. As we move forward into 2013 I will also be writing more instructional blogs and filming videos to go along with them.

So now that we've finished (or nearly finished in my case) our holiday gifts it's time for some selfish knitting/crocheting/sewing!  Do you have some things planned?

I'm still working on one Christmas gift, a couple of gifts for up coming birthdays, my Knit Red - A-line Hoodie and a very overdue pair of fingerless gloves for my younger son. Then I'll be all set to do my selfish knitting! (IF I don't get too side tracked with some sewing projects I'm working on and a couple of new ideas I have.) I'm wanting to knit more shawls/shawlettes for myself, I've been saying for the past year and a half that I need a blue shawl and a blue sweater, now I have both planned and the yarns purchased.

 For my blue shawl I've picked out these yarns for a single strand Truckee Shawlette.
Malabrigo Lace Superwash in Volcan and Tosh Prairie Short skein in Worn Denim
 I decided on these two different yarns because the colors work well together for me and the colors I wear.

 I've also purchased more Tosh for Romi Hill's Carson Shawl and I've started a Wingspan in Schoppel Wolle Crazy Zauberball that would be nice to finish. (I see now that there is a Lace Wingspan!  I may have to start over and do that one instead.) I also have several sweaters and Litchfield hat & mitts planned. Not to mention the Downton Abby KAL... Oh dear! There I go again getting way ahead of myself. I should never have written down what I want to start, I feel behind already! LOL!

How about a felted project? Who doesn't need another bag? There are some wonderful Bag and Tote patterns to choose from too. Ok, I need to STOP now before I plan myself too big of a hole to knit my way out of this year! How to decide what to do first? The yarns I've purchased are so pretty and I know the Downton Abby KAL won't take much time each week, so perhaps one of the shawls would be a good choice...

Then there are all thing things I want to learn this year, I haven't even really started that list yet!

Learning to make Sew Red Heart Pincushion(s)

We are gearing up for the release of the Sew Red book, our companion to Knit Red and another addition to our Stitch Red campaign. We are truly proud of this project and the fact that we have helped to raise awareness about the number one killer of women in the US, heart disease. The project has also raised some real $$ for the Heart Truth and will go to support awareness campaigns, as well as medical research.

Sew (heehee pun intended), with all this gearing up we decided to give the charming 'Piece of My Heart Pincushion' a go here at the shop and boy have we been having fun! This darling design was created by Diane Lamphron and Michèle Filon and we will be offering kits once the book is released. Of course we couldn't wait to play so we had to make a few heart of our own to display around the shop!

Kaity, who is our PR gal and also heads up our Special Projects team here at JBW, just got her first (ever) sewing machine and asked me if I would help her learn how to make her very own pincushion. Of course I said, "sure thing, chicken wing!" I had so much fun making my own and it was a real joy helping Kaity get up and running with hers!

Note in the great picture of Kaity sewing up her 1st heart it's not her machine she is using, it's mine. Her new machine is still a little lonely in its box at her house. I had mine here at the shop for an apron class and we decided to have an impromptu heart class. Please let her know that it's time to take it out of box!!! Believe me she is ready!

All kidding aside, she was a great student which is all too evident in this photo of her holding up her adorable almost finished heart. I thought I had a needle and thread in my basket of tricks, but alas no, so I will teach her how to blind stitch real soon.

I made a couple of these little gems too and found that it is super easy to make them small, large, or any size in between! I will be making them for more than pincushions...how about door knob accents, or even make tiny ones for pins, or well (I could go on) you get the idea!! We are going crazy with the endless possibilities of it all!





For now I am off to play with more hearts and am wondering how big I could make one? Possibly a pillow size? Stay tuned...

Journey of a Knitwear Designer

I was recently talking with Laura (Jimmy) about some of the things I’ve learned in the last six months as the official in-house designer for Jimmy Beans Wool and she suggested I write about those things here. I’ve learned a lot, had some hits and misses, and continue to come up with new ideas and find inspiration every day. This is my journey…

Basic Neckie Design
Some of you may know that I designed a few knitted items before I started designing for Jimmy Beans Wool. My first design, the Basic Neckie (which eventually became a free pattern on the Jimmy Beans Wool site) was designed for a friend who came to me with an idea for a short buttoned neck scarf and asked if I knew how to make something like that. I said sure, I could figure it out. I did, then I taught her how to make it, then I made and sold them on Etsy. It was fun for a while, but got pretty burned out after a while.

Flash forward eight years. By last fall I’d self-published a few more patterns under the name “Marinade Designs,” including the Hipster Hat, Donner Pass Cowl, and Winter Wheat Hat that a bunch of the gals here at the shop have knit. (Sharon, Shevawn, and Sandy are usually the first to knit my designs, thanks for the support ladies!) Then, in September of last year I was offered the HUGE opportunity to design something for the Knit Red book. I was SO thrilled and nervous too. Being published meant that I actually had to start trying harder to make something of this little passion of mine. Now was the perfect time, the momentum was starting. It’s funny, once I started putting that energy out into the universe, it was easier to make things happen. 

So, I started submitting designs to magazines early this year. There was one hit and a lot of misses, but that’s ok, I knew it would be a challenge. While at Stitches West this year, I mentioned to Laura that I was starting to submit designs to magazines and that I really wanted to give this designing thing a shot. Being the amazing boss that she is, she listened thoughtfully as I told her my goals. I had no idea that a month later, she’d find a way to make my dream a reality! (I really do work for the most amazing people. Seriously.)

So here I am, six months and nine designs later (mostly knit, one crochet and two sewing patterns), the official in-house designer for Jimmy Beans Wool. I create at least one new free pattern each month for our Newsletter and Free Pattern page of the website. Knitting patterns are definitely my specialty right now as that is where most of my experience lies, but as I continue to develop my skill range in crochet and sewing I am planning to offer more of those patterns as well. In fact, last month’s pattern was actually two-in-one. “Hats for the Whole Family” featured both knit and crochet versions of a simple hat pattern that covers all sizes from Infant to XL adult. The best thing is that these patterns are free to all of you on the Jimmy Beans Wool website. Hopefully you are finding some of them useful!

The market bag pattern I designed for Knit Red turned out to be my first official published design. When it hit in June, it felt so surreal that I had a published design. In an actual book. Right in between patterns from Jared Flood (aka. Brooklyn Tweed) and Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton. JARED FLOOD AND CORNELIA TUTTLE HAMILTON!!!! Wow! So amazing and such an honor to share a space with these two greats, along with so many other brilliant designers that I've idolized for years.

My next published design (aside from the Jimmy Beans Free Pattern each month) is due out in the Winter 2012 issue of Knitscene Magazine. I am SO excited! I think I have every issue of Knitscene ever published. I am so honored to have been given these opportunities. I hope that you’ll join me as I learn and grow here at Jimmy Beans Wool.

I’ll be blogging about these designs and my process here regularly and would love if you would join me here when you can. Feel free to send me your comments and feedback. I would love to hear from you and welcome any advice you might want to share. I know that we all have a design aesthetic that we lean towards and you may have noticed by now that I love garter stitch, short rows, and simple design. Someday, I would love to design beautiful sweaters and larger garments as my knowledge base grows. I am learning day by day and cannot wait to see how my style evolves over time. I welcome you to my journey and hope that you’ll pull up a chair, sit, and knit a while with me.

Introducing "Knit Red"...and a Giveaway!

Whew! It’s been a whirlwind few weeks for us here at Jimmy Beans, primarily due to one very exciting new development- the release of our book Knit Red! For those of you who are not yet familiar with the book, I hope you’ll read on to learn more about it!

Knit Red has been a long time in the making. Back in 2007, I was meeting with my friend Marta McGinnis who also happened to be one of our yarn reps. She had recently suffered a heart attack and had been diagnosed with heart disease. It was a total shock to me that someone so young (she was just barely in her fifties) and so seemingly healthy could already have heart disease! Also earlier that year, my husband Doug, who is extremely active and healthy and also young (in his mid-thirties) had been diagnosed with high blood pressure. Marta and I were so amazed to learn that heart disease can affect a wide range of people, not just older men. At that moment, we began to brainstorm ideas to create an awareness campaign in hopes of educating more people about this deadly disease. Sadly, Marta passed away just six months later and for a variety of reasons, our ideas were put on hold for a few years.

In 2010, the timing for something like this just seemed right so I began working again on what has now become the “Stitch Red” campaign. At TNNA in January of 2011, we pitched the idea to our friends in the industry many of whom are vendors and designers. Almost everyone we talked to jumped at the chance to participate whether it be through creating a Stitch Red product to sell or designing something for the Knit Red book. We heard so many personal stories and ties to heart disease from these friends and vendors that we knew that Stitch Red could really work. SoHo publishing (they publish Vogue Knitting) immediately agreed to help us publish Knit Red. We were so thrilled to see so much support for something that is so near and dear to our hearts- literally!

Next we set out to find a partner in all of this. We loved the Heart Truth campaign (known for their little red dress logo seen on Diet Coke cans) and what they stood for and knew that they would make a natural fit for a partnership in the campaign. The Heart Truth itself is a national awareness campaign that focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyle and gives tips to help prevent heart disease. Most importantly, they focus heavily on women and the importance of knowing the individual symptoms which are often very different than in men.

All of the vendors that are participating in Stitch Red are donating at least 5% of the gross profits from that product to the Heart Truth. Jimmy Beans Wool is donating 5% of the gross profits from the Knit Red book as well. Ultimately, we want the entire needle arts industry to get involved including local yarn shops, crocheters, sewers and quilters, and many more. We are already working on a 2nd book that will come out early next year called “Sew Red” which will focus on designs for sewers and quilters.

Knit Red itself features 30 designs knit in red yarns from industry knitwear designers (including two of them who work here at Jimmy Beans- Jeanne and Kristen) and includes items that range from sweaters to accessories to home items. I just love all of the designs in this book. To me it represents the amazing power that we have as knitters to create something meaningful and share that with the world. You can view all of the designs on Ravelry to see what I mean. They are just stunning. I can’t say enough about them. Many of the designs use yarns that are Stitch Red products so when you knit the garment, you can support Stitch Red even more!

Spring Knit-along and Sew-along- Week 6 check in!

Hi everyone!
Almost ready to separate the sleeves!
I hope that you are all making progress on both your Goodale cardigans and skirts (if you are sewing as well)!  I’ve been admittedly remiss about knitting my Goodale due to some other work-related knitting that has been going on. As in-house designer here at Jimmy Beans, I often have to set aside less deadline-oriented knitting for designing. I don’t mind because designing is super fun, but it sometimes means that other projects sit on the needles a little too long! 
You'll notice my Goodale update picture to the right. I am two rows away from dividing for the sleeves and will probably do that tonight. You can’t really tell from this picture but my sweater already measures 10”! I’m not sure how the gauge became so off, but it’s probably ok if I have some extra length anyway. I was just surprised when I measured it the other day. I’ve followed the pattern exactly, but I think it’s just the gauge. In any case, I think I am going to get a ton of wear out of this once I am finished!

I also began work on my skirt just last night. I only had a few minutes before dinner so I cut and ironed the fabric (Amy Butler Twilight Peony in Azure) and sewed the french seams. French seams have to be my new favorite thing when it comes to sewing. They are by no means a new technique, but I recently fell in love with the amazingly neat and smooth inner seam they create. And they are SO simple too! You just place the fabric together with the printed side facing out and sew. Trim the edges down to about 1/8-1/4 of an inch, and turn inside out and iron down the seams. Then sew another seam with the printed sides of the fabric facing in. Now you have a nice clean seam on the inside that won’t fray!

Brett goes more into this in her book and in her video online that I shared in last week’s post. I highly recommend trying it if you haven’t already! I have a decent size stack of fabrics that I’ll be making into more of these skirts for summer in the coming weeks. I think they are becoming a new wardrobe staple! After I make a few more of those, I am planning to make a whole bunch of new pillow cases for my bed using the french seam technique. Brett gives a simple pattern for pillow cases in “Sewing in a Straight Line” as well. I have really been bit by the sewing bug!

So much news!!!

Huge awww factor don't you think??

We have had so much going on around here that as usual I don't know where to start! I guess the beginning would be the best place and that is to show off our newest little bean, Penelope Harper!! She was born on April 2nd, weighed in at 7lbs 15oz and was 20 1/2 inches long...wow!! Welcome to the world Penelope and CONGRATULATIONS to Bethany and George!!





Huck was a little tentative (chickens bite)





In other news, I got to take Huck to see my daughter and son-in-laws (Shelly and Rory) urban farm and he had so much fun!  He fed the chickens and asked lots of questions about plants, and the greenhouse. Of course Shelly and Rory enjoyed having him visit. After the farm adventure we went to The Discovery Museum and did all kinds of stuff!! We camped, flew a plane, road a horse, fished, went through some caves and climbed this amazing structure in the center of the whole thing...it was a blast! Of course he didn't want to leave when it was time, but in the end I won that small skirmish. Ha ha!!

I am so lucky that I get to be part of Huck's life! He is really an amazing guy and will be 3 at the end of May...it's hard to believe that it's been 3 years...WOW!

He did ask me to get into the plane with him and then told me that he needed his space...I love how he can be so articulate!

Then to top things off (as if we needed more to be excited about) we got an advance copy of the Knit Red book for our viewing pleasure and I can't truly express how thrilled I am to be involved in such a great project!

The book is more amazing than I could have imagined and not only are there amazing stories of how heart disease has affected each and every designer in the book, but ideas on how to stay healthy, recipes, as well as tips on knitting!!

Wow is all I have to say...I am in a book!


I have to confess that I have already knit one of the patterns from the book and it is amazing!! I knit up Ysolda's hat that uses short rows in such a great creative way that I know you will want to give it a go too!

Wow. What a busy couple of weeks we have had around here...phew!!

Stitch Red is a hit at TNNA!!!

 I am one lucky little bean! I got to tag along to TNNA and help spread the word about Stitch Red!! I can't tell you how exciting it was to be at the event and then to have such a wonderful, enthusiastic response to the project. Well, just knock me over with a feather!

I was, unfortunately, star-struck and didn't think to start taking pictures until late into Saturday. Sorry! I met Iris Schreier (Artyarns) and her husband Elliot! Super, super neat people! I met Sharon the owner of Lantern Moon and had a real blast! I also hung out with Nadine, the owner of Be Sweet, and all of these ladies are AMAZING!!


I did a get a shot of Iris's sweater designed by Daniela Johannsenova from the Knit Red book in the fashion show and I have to say that I can't wait to work it up with those fantastic yarns of hers!

I met Ysolda who is also in the book and she is just as sweet as she is cute! I am so privileged to say that she signed a copy of her about-to-be-released Whimsical Little Knits 3 book for Sandy and me...YIPPPEEE!!! Thanks Ysolda!!! You will want this fantastic little treasure for your library for sure!

I ran into Diane Soucy and Renie of Knitting Pure and Simple. They were having a blast!! I touched base with them at the Bryson booth and we had a good little chat!

Norah is super sweet!
I met Norah Gaughn and she is super sweet and humble about her talent. She is also featured in the Knit Red book. Norah is Berroco's head designer and they had the samples from her newest publication, Vol 10.

It was so neat to see them worked up and I will have a hard time not casting on soon...sigh. I have some finishing to do first.





I have to say it was a really successful trip and I can't wait to see what all of the wonderful folks come up with as their products to add to the Stitch Red campaign.  Here is a shot of Leanne just being, well, Leanne! She was so much fun to travel with and room with. That's why we call her LeAwesome around here!
