Downton Abbey Mystery KAL Week #3 - Episode Guide

Hi everyone,

So like last week, the prompts are in order. These are the actual events that inspired the clues. I hope the knitting this week went more smoothly than the last. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Clue #1: When Rose is rescued from an embarrassing situation, do the following:

**Rose was saved (much to the chagrin of the Crowley family in attendance) by the suave jazz singer Jack Ross when her dance partner, who was quite drunk and rowdy, fled the dance floor to empty his stomach.

Beginner: Stockinette (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to 1 st before marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4

*repeat rows 1 & 2 once more. If you finished the week 2 clue with 57 sts instead of 55 sts, do not do the increases on the second repeat of Row 1 of the pattern. (59 sts between markers)

Intermediate: Mock Rib (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (k1, p1) repeat to last st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 3 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (p1, k1) repeat to 1 st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 4 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*You should now have 60 sts in between markers.

Clue #2: When Mary receives a surprising request, from a certain gentleman, knit the following:

**Mary receives a marriage proposal from Lord Gillingham. Not like we didn't see it coming or anything since he was obviously smitten with her. Too bad it came so soon after Matthews death. He seems like a nice guy.

Beginner: Reverse Angle Mesh Lace (4 rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, (yo, ssk) repeat to last stitch before marker, yo, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, p to last 4 sts, k4.

*Repeat Rows 1 & 2 one more time. (63 sts between markers)  **Stitch counts updated on 1/20**

Note: Like last week, after the first row, you may find that when you get to the last 2 sts before the marker, your only option is to ssk, but then you don't have a last stitch to increase into. On those rows, when you get to the last 2 sts, yo, ssk but don't drop off the sts, then knit into the front of the stitches (since you’ve already knit into the back). This doesn't increase, but it negates the decrease and maintains the pattern, similarly to last week’s mesh lace.

Intermediate: Loop Stitch (4 Rows)

Row 1 (RS): k4, *k1f&b, k to last st before next marker, k1f&b; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

Row 2 (WS): k4, *(k1, sl 1 wyib) repeat to last 2 sts before next marker, k2; repeat from * to last 4 sts, k4.

*Repeat Rows 1 & 2 once more. (64 sts between markers)

Clue #3: When Edith makes a risky decision, knit the following:

**So Edith makes the decision to spend the night with Mr. Gregson. A risky choice given his impending absence and the lack of a ring on her finger...

(67 sts between markers)  **Stitch counts updated on 1/20**

Note: Some rows you may find that when you get to the last 2 sts before the marker, your only option is to ssk, but then you don't have a last stitch to increase into.

(68 sts between markers)

Again, I am here to help if there is any confusion! Just let me know!

Happy Knitting,
Kristen

  1. Is it correct that I need to start on my second skein of yarn, about halfway through these clues? Thanks.

  2. I wondered the same thing. I'm worried.

  3. Will the pattern work if I follow some of the beginner directions and some of the intermediate or should I stick to one level?

  4. On the question of yardage, yes you should be starting your 2nd skein in the middle of this week. Yes, you can switch up the directions between intermediate and beginner. Just keep in mind that your stitch counts may change if you do the beginner Mesh lace, which is fine, but I just thought I should point it out.

  5. Why are you calling prompt 2 and 3 this week Reverse Open mesh? It is the same exact pattern for week 2 prompt 2 Open Mesh. Is the mesh suppose to be reversed this week and you posted the wrong instructions? The mesh is identical to last week. So confusing as to why they are named differently. Please comment on this...Thanks. Also, I am concerned about having enough yarn. Looks like I have used around 3/4 of the yarn and still weeks to go. My stitch count is right and also gauge is right.

  6. I wrote the last post and went back and looked again at week 2 and week 3. There is a difference, in week 2 you yarn over K2tog and week 3 you yarn over and SSK. Not a big difference in how they look. I answered my own question. Still worried about having enough yarn.

  7. This has been a very frustrating KAL. Wasted quite a bit of time on it just to get started. Hopefully with the updates it will go more smoothly.

  8. Just wanted to say THANK YOU Kristen for this KAL and everything that's gone along with it. :) I've been so enjoying knitting something Downton-inspired, and loving how it is turning out! Not knowing what the end product will look like has let me focus in on the details, the yarn, the stitches, and it's been so much fun. Thank you for all your hard work!
